Battery Drain
#1
Hello. I have a vitacci hawk that has a battery drain. The quad start and runs perfectly but if the battery is left connected for more than a day or two it is dead. It has done this since I bought the quad brand new. I believe the issue is related to the remote control shut off. I have experimented with unplugging the remote control shut off box and found that the quad can sit for weeks with out the battery going dead as long as the box is disconnected. I did some additional testing today and found that with everything including the key turned off, there was a 5 mA draw. I unplugged each electrical plug on the quad individually and tested for the amp draw each time. The only time a change in the draw was seen was when the remote control shut off box was disconnected. The battery is brand new and hold a charge of 12.4 volts as long the remote control shut off box is disconnected. I checked the charging system on the quad and found it to be charging at 13 volts at mid to high RPMs. Am I right in thinking that the remote control shut off box is bad and causing my dead battery or is there additional testing I should do before ordering a new shut off box?
PS: I would bypass the remote control shut off box completely, but my youngest boy is getting ready to learn to ride and the remote shut off will be needed as he learns. Thanks.

Looks like you have done about all you can. The charge rate seems a bit low, but these small machines don't need a heavy charging system, as long as it covers starting the bike. The regulator is usually the cause of drains, as it is usually the only thing left on once the ignition is off. I would put an isolator on the battery so it doesn't drain overnight. You can remove it and the remote box, once your child has gained enough riding experience.

Is there a good way to test the regulator? If I am understanding the remote control shut off box should not have power with they key off. When working appropriately, should there be any draw on the battery when the key is off?

"when I unplugged the ignition switch the draw also went away."
Then you have a faulty ignition switch. With ign off everything except regulator should be isolated. Remote could be an exception, but not if, as you wrote, "the remote control shut off box should not have power with they key off" then the switch should cut power to it.
You test the regulator for drain the same as everything else, by seeing if the drain goes when you unplug it but, as it is not draining with ign off, it isn't the regulator.
