why is a stock scrambler400 4x4 way faster than a xplorer 400 4x4?

I think these are some reasons:

heavier, with the racks and excess fenders

transmision, I don't know technically what but I know the explorer has a low

clutch, I think they are set up differently (springs, weights, ect.)

Im not sure but they may have different sprockets. Thats just a maybe though.

I'm not really sure about all these but thats just some stuff I've heard.

Here's a few reasons I know of:

1. Explorer is about 100 lbs heavier.
2. Clutching in the Explorer is different(springs, weights, helix(?))
3. Explorer has 25 inch tires while Scrambler has 22 & 23 inch tires.
4. Scrambler supposedly has a "factory tuned" pipe, and different porting.
5. Scrambler is geared slightly higher since it has smaller tires and less weight
6. if it makes any difference, Scrambler is more aerodynamic.
7. the name Scrambler sounds WAY faster than Explorer

WIscrambler,
Although I agree with your reasons 1-6, I truly believe it's your reason #7 that really gets it done. Good post.

I agree with everything, but smaller tires make your quad geared lower. They smaller the tire the lower your gears. They bigger the tire, the more top end you have, higher gear ratio. The Scram isn't way faster than the Xplorer.

Logically I agree with monk, but it seems that a larger (and wider) tire can rob horsepower. I haven't experimented with it, but I'd imagine that there is "happy medium". Just my thoughts.

On my scrambler 400 I added mud machine tires that were the same size as stock but a bit wider. They really stole power away from me. The next time I get tires, I am going back to stock size.
