What is the best Synthetic Oil to run in a 4-stroke air cooled ATV. (ex Honda Recon)
Has anyone with a Honda Recon experienced clutch slip while using a synthetic based oil?
I was looking at
-Castrol Syntec SAE 20W-50 or
-Castrol Syntec Blend SAE 20W-50

Amsoil Motorcycle oil.It is wet clutch compatible. The price should be around $6.90 a qt.for 20W/50 and $5.70 for10W/40.

I have been running Amsoil since my frist quad, never a problem in any of my quads or XR's. The clutch slippage problem was long ago sloved

I have a 2000 Recon that I've been using Mobil 1 15w50 in since it was new and haven't had any problems. Actually, I've been using it in all my quads (numerous 250x's, TRX90, 400EX, Recon, & soon it my Son's 250EX) since '95 and haven't had a problem with any of them! Wal-Mart here has it for $4.29 a quart... sometimes they have the big 5 quart containers for $14.99.

Hope this helps,

Avoid Castrol Syntec. It's actually at the bottom of the synthetic oil chain & not really a "synthetic" at all.

It is a level 3 hydrocracked mineral oil - not truly synthetic. It's better than standard mineral oil, but if I'm buying a synthetic, I want synthetic. You're not getting what you're paying for with this oil.

Stay away from blends. The only reason a "synthetic blend" exists is to meet a price point. There are no advantages of this oil over synthetic.

Amsoil is a level 4 PAO (polyalphaolefin) based oil - descent stuff.

Mobil1 is a level 4 PAO, with some level 5 bases mixed in (polyolesters and diesters) - hence the "Tri-Synthetic" labeling.

Redline, Motul, and some others that I can't think of are level 5 ester based synthetic. These are typically double the cost of Mobil1 and Amsoil, but are really good stuff.

Personally, I run Mobil1 15w50. Excellent oil, easy to obtain (Walmart), and relatively inexpensive (approx $4/qt).

Great!!!
Thanks for all the help
I think I will go out and buy some Mobil 1 and some Amsoil, try each for a couple of months and see which one I like the best.
Right now I run Bel Ray 10W-40 its OK. But last week I overheated and want something that handles the heat better.
