Hey guys I just got a 1996 trx250R, I was woundering if there are anythings I should look out for or any special needs. Also what is a good mixture for gas/oil. I used to have an ATC 250R and used to pour 16 ounces into 5 gallons but I've been told this is too lean. Any help would be apprecicated.

I think a good rule of thumb is 50:1, it all depends on what kind of oil you have too, also I hope you mean 1986 not 1996

Things U should know.

1.Get a casesaver sidecasing are expensive and it is a pain to put a new one in.

2.always run good oil.I like maxima castrol 927.I run it 32.1.

3.Keep an eye out for frame cracks.Look around the seat mounts, foot peg mounts, upper shock mounts, where the swingarm mounts, steering stem.etc

4.Always run/check your transmission fluid.I always use gearsaver.I am not sure who makes it.I think maxima.

5.Keep an eye on the jetting.Check the plug.It should be a nice brown color. Not tan or black but a light brown.

6.Lube your cables.I bought a cable luber and new cables with a Easy pull clutch perch and lever. It helps alot U don't tired as fast.

7.Keep good chain and sprockets on it.I had worn chain and sprockets and it kept throwing the chain.I finally replced them and know it is fine. Also keep them well lubed.

8.Get a locknut for the axle.I have a durablue posi loc.Alot of people had bad luck.Mine has been great though.A little peace of mind is always good.

9.since U just got it would go over it real well.Change the tranny fluid, check the chain.Take the A-arms off and grease them, grease the linkage, lube the chain,Check brake pads, etc

10.Where a helmet and have fun!

Congrats on your new R - you will love it.

Ugly pretty much covered everything. The only thing I would add is that you should get some Hinson airbox rings to keep the airbox flange from distorting and letting dirt in. They are about $20.

One other thing that it overlooked is the swing arm bearings. It is a good idea to pull the swing arm bolt at least once a year to clean the shaft and grease the bearings. There have been times the swing arm bolt had to be cut out in pieces to remove. Pulling in once a year pretty well elimiates this kinda of problem.
