I would like to be able to read about how the shocks work in detail and how to adjust them for each type of terrain you ride on.

If you want a very detailed and technical explanation, check out the Adobe file for Custom Axis shocks. They explain EVERYTHING you need to know and a great deal about things you probably might not care about. http://www.customaxisshocks.com and download the technical manual
