Kawasaki Mojave Reverse Engagement
#1
Hi, I really need help!! MY Mojave (not sure wut year, white plastics, purple frame, blue seat cover) My problem is that I can go into reverso without turning the reverse ****!!!! Sometimes When I downthift quick, I go into reverse, and it aint too pretty!! I need to fix this! The reverse **** is not hard to turn, and it returns fine, i tried loosening the adjuster, and tightening it, but that didnt help! Also, I put the speedomter on it, and I calibrated it for the front wheel (10"
. The speedomtere only reads 43 mph top speed! Pretty weak! I heard the Mojave should do 54.2 top speed, what gives? There are no signs of anything wrong! It starts 1st kick with the choke, and revs fine. It does seem to overheat more then often, the overflow bottle is full after every ride (I fill the radiator every ride with 50 water and 50 antifreeze) Also what is a good pipe to get? I am pretty sure im getting the K&N air filter and jet kit, but i dont know which pipe, i want one with the most power, for not alot of $$$$. Please Help me! Thanks Guys! I had an 88 mojave and sold it to my buddy. I still ride it often and work on it all the time. It was white with a gray frame. His bike is doing the same thing that yours is doing now. I replaced the reverse button before i sold it to him so i know it doesn't need to be replaced. I think it's kinda handy not to have to stop and hold the button and then it goes into reverse. You just have to watch it so you don't over shift. The best pipe that we found for it is the supertrapp ids2. I put dg on it first and it didn't give it much power at all. The supertrapp makes it wheelie into 3rd gear easily. The k&n is a good add on also. I dropped one tooth on the countershaft to a 12 tooth and it really helped low end power.

Once I get the Pipe Filter and jet kit, I would liek to pull a taller gearing, because I want more top speed, but I am afraid that if i go up one tooth in the front, it will be too tall for the stock motor. With the pipe filter and jet kit, will the motor be able to pull taller gearing with not TOO much of a loss on bottom? I ride trails, and like to open it up on the Powerlines trails as much as possible. Thanks

Kawi250, have you ever adjusted your valves on your bike? Has it ever been rebuilt? It sounds like it isn't running right if it only goes 43 mph. If you go up a tooth on the front you won't be able to wheelie as easily. I tried dropping 4 teeth on the rear sprocket and could never find enough space to open it up all the way. I think that if you tune your bike right and put exhaust on there you will have more top speed with out changing the gearing.

I jus took off the cover that goes over the reverse engagement lever. I found that the key had snapped off inside there, and the shaft would just spin, instead of being stopped by the lever. I cut an alan key, to make a key for the shaft. It worked great with no problems so far. Hope this helps! Also, I got the bike 1 month ago, and I never had the valves adjusted, and I know the owner before me didn't rebuild the motor. Also, would the cam timing be enough to make it not go full speed? Like I said, the engine starts easily, and it seems to rev fine. Thanks

If the cam timing was off then the bike would backfire and wouldn't start easily. You should do a compression check on it. That will let you know if your rings are almost gone.

Also, my Mojave spills anitfreeze alot, I fil it up after every ride, because it is almost empty after a 3 hour ride. I already hot wired the fan, so it is on all the time the engine is, but it still seems to spill coolant. I dont think the bike is overheating, could it be a gasket leak? The same thing happened with my YZ 80, until the engine blew, needing a crank rebuild and complete top end rebuild. Help! Thanks

I believe that the compression should be right at 100 for the mojave. You might check your head gasket or base gasket for holes. You also might try bleeding your cooling system. If there is air in there it would cause it to overheat or spill out.
