Depending on your size try a 300ex
They're much easier to ride then the 400 due to lower gearing.

How old are you? How tall are you? How much do you weigh? How "sporty" are we talking here? You can learn to use a clutch, more or less, in a day. As far as easy to learn on, a Mohave or Blaster would probably fit the bill, as they are small and not teribly powerful, but you may out grow these machines pretty qick, especially if you are trying to keep up with 400EX's, Banshee's or Raptors. Also, you should consider the source when taking advice on this subject. You're sure to hear from at least half the Blaster/Mohave/300EX/Warrior crowd telling you how they regularly blow away 400EX's, 250R's, & Quadzilla's on their supper fast and amazingly agile machines. Don't buy it. The former are all nice, mellow trail/sport quads but don't have the ponies or suspention to hang with the bigger quads, particularly in the sand.

Well, I just sold my 400EX and one the biggest reasons why was that it was such a pig in the sand. If you want REAL performance in the sand you need at least a 250 two stroke or 650 four stroke. The problem is these aren't really learner bikes. Maybe you can pick up a used Blaster really cheap, learn to ride it, and then go to a 250R, Banshee, or Raptor in a few months. Otherwise, just go for the higher performance machine now and be really, really careful until you get used to it.

Honda TRX250R. It's a two stoke MX bike made in the late 80's. It's the one that 90% of the pro MXers ride. Only has about 25 horse power stock ( the 400EX has 27 ), but they're easy and cheap to hop up. Most of the ones you find are not stock anymore, and if in good shape will smoke a stock 400EX. It takes more effort and skill to ride a two stoke, but for the sand they're much better.
