The 4X4 Rancher has a reduction gear (which the 2X4 doesn't have). This is to give the bike more low end power, but it also slows top speed down a bit. I have not ridden with Rubicons much, but I would bet that they are a fair bit faster. I put a K&N and FMF pipe on the Rancher, and the difference is quite noticeable.

The rubicon is faster by 5 MPH at top speed, it also has superior acceleration and hill climbing speed. That's not to say the rancher is pokey as it'll stay ahead of many '300' size utility competitors.

When I first got my Rubicon it went 54mph.
After I started putting on more stuff, winch, flat gas can, bags, and Misc. stuff it has gone down to about 50.
I road with a Rancher once and it went 50 with nothing on it. We kept up nicely with all my gear.
