problems with a 250x

My friends 250x wont start, its got spark, and compression but it wont start, it smoked but it was black smoke, not blue. Is tis all carb problems or is it something mor serious??? please help......

Black smoke indicates too much fuel. Maybe the float is sunk(full of fuel)or the vent lines for the carb could be plugged up or the needle and seat may be shot or dirty and allowing to much fuel to enter the engine.
