Problem with my SP700
#1
The problem first started when I rolled my SP700. After it rolled and I got it back on its wheels the engine was racing even though it was just setting there idling. It was idling so high that it wouldn’t allow me to shift into gear, which I assumed was a built in safety mechanism so I couldn’t grind anything and cause damage. So I had to turn the engine off and shift it into gear and then restart the engine so it wouldn’t grind just so I could get it home. After I got it home I adjusted what I believe is the throttle wire that runs up the handle bar to the throttle. This adjustment got the idling down to where it seemed normal and the machine now let me shift. I assumed that when I rolled it the throttle wire must have gotten bumped and everything was now fine. But the next time I took the bike out for a ride it was backfiring like crazy. Especially if I got on the throttle and then backed off. It would backfire as soon as I let off the throttle. It also wanted to or did stall every time I came to a complete stop for a few minutes. I am by no means a mechanic nor do I pretend to be and this is why I am asking you fellas to help me out. Why would the bike be backfiring and stalling out on me like it is. And if it is simple to fix let me know how to fix it. Any help would be appreciated b/c I don’t want to have to haul it to the dealer and pay him if it is something simple to fix or adjust. Thanks in advance

Sounds to me like you have the ETC out of adjustment. That is where the cable goes into the throttle box on the handlebars. The manuals say that you should have something like no more than 1/8 inch movement in your throttle. There is also another adjustment on the carb. for idle. If you rolled it, maybe the cable got hung up on something between the carb. and handlebars, check this first.

I would have to agree here. It sounds like the throttle cable moved or got wedged somewhere. And could just be the fact that it was upsidedown, this does funny things to most wheelers. They usually clear up in a few minutes at most. This would cause the high idle. When you adjusted it from the adjustment along the handlebars, you probably did go to far and put the ETC out of adjustment. This is really easy to fix. First screw the adjustment back in a ways. Start the machine and slowly turn the adjustment back out until it comes down to a comfortable idle. Now if you turn it to far then it will die because the throttle lever and cable have lost a connection so the machine is told to shut off.
Right now if you were to start pushing slowly on the throttle with the machine not running. You would feel it start moving and then bump up against the cable. When it hits that point, the machine will idle. You have to at least adjust that cable so that free play isn't there.
I'm not completely sure on this but, I wouldn't think this is your true idle setting anyway. That should be located on the carb somewhere. I belive that the adjustment on the cable itself is for the ETC adjustment. I have had to adjust this on a couple of them at work.
You are also the first SP700 crash victom I've heard about. Thanks, just good to here about one of the new ones rolled over. I know mine been on its roof its share of times. Still never messed anything up from them.

Thanks for the info elroy. It is greatly appreciated. Also, this wasn't the first time it has been rolled. HAHA Kind of pisses you off when you roll your machine but I guess it is just part of the game.
