my rear brakes on my 01 rancher 2x4 just stoped working. i took the plug off and black water came out. so i sprayed water in it and let it drain out untill it was clear. the brakes dryed but they still dont work. im guessing that the water/mud that i got in there eat away the pads? i tried to take the hub off but i cant get the axle nut off because when i turn the nut, the whole axle turns and i cant keep it from turning w/o the parking brake working. would new pads be the fix? they worked fine untill we went riding at buckhorn and i started going though black mud and red clay mud.

hey when you try to turn the axle nut put the machine in gear. it wont turn unless you have unbelieable strengh or a pry bar. it should come off. can you pull the break leaver to the bar? or does it still feel tight. if it does take it apppart and clean it. mudd and dirt shoud not wear apppart the pads i could be wroing but i go in mudd and water all the time and it is still ok. good luck.

Your not the only one without back brakes. My rear hand brake stopped working and my Quad is only 5 months old! 217.7 hrs 1,750 miles!

the foot brake is as tight as i can get it and it goes all the way to the floorboard. when i pull the lever, it comes back and wont go out. the whole cable moves. while pushing the foot brake, i can look at the outside of the brake drum and see where it turns the thing that goes inside.

try using an extension in you socket or what ever you are using and keep the tires on the hubs and back it up against a wall and try turning it then. GOOD LUCK!
