My bud has a 450, don't know if it is s or es, anyways.. he says it is in the shop because it sucked in mud thru the recoil starter area and killed his engine! He says that is a slightly known problem, anyone else heard of this? I tried to search and found nothing.

it is in the shop now having the engine rebuilt, and all Honda will do is pay the labor... he is pretty pissed.

Hope I got all the info right, I just got off the phone with him and said I would ask around

thx for any info..

Man thats odd , I've never heard of anything like that before , it was probably a one time thing for the 450s. It was probably just a flaw in his machine.
Is it under warrenty? cuz if it isn't I'd call honda and see what they can do because it obiously wasn't sealed properly from the factory, and honda should have to cover in unless your friend tinkered with his pull cord at one time or another.

he told me it was out of warranty. He also said that Honda don't want to do anything because they see it as exposure to excessive mud or some BS...

I dont' think he has done anything to it, except the usual.. tires and winch

What is exactly the problem??

Honda will not cover anything from water or mud damage on any machine if it is evident that the damage was due to the machine being run in water or mud over axle deep. Nor should they. It's in the warranty agreement when he bought his quad. If he didn't read it, that's his problem.

Yamaha and Kawasaki also have similar policies, but the Yamaha is even more strict than the Honda.

Your buddy should get over his rage and be lucky that Honda is even going to cover the labor.

wow, that is pretty crappy.. you aren't supposed to ride your bike in mud over the axle? guess I never read the warranties, of course, I usually have Yamahammers and don't have to worry about that kind of stuff

actually, my old 250x was the most bullet proof bike I ever owned (even better then any Yamaha I had)

I don't exactly know the problem.. I just know what he told me rather quickly.. he said the engine sucked in mud/water thru the recoil starter, and now his eng is gone

BEWARE.... All machines with recoil starters are suseptable to this. Water and mud can and will get into your recoil starter unless the hole where the cord goes in is sealed. Some models also have a drain hole in the bottom of the recoil caseing that has to be sealed as well. Behind the recoil there is a seal on the crankshaft which, when subjected to constant mud and water, will eventually wear enough that it allows water to be sucked into the engine. Seal the recoil components and the problem is solved. The first indication that you may be getting mud and water into your recoil is of course that the rope will be wet and dirty.... Preventive maintenance.
