I want a 4wd rancher and have a chance to buy a 2wd at a good price. Is it possible , costworthy to convert a 2wd to 4wd?? Seems like since there's no actual 2wd/4wd OEM converter all that's required is the front end conversion to 4wd. Dive shaft and drive axiles.

Based on new Honda price list the cost should be around or under $500???

thanks

$500.00?????

If you look at the frame on the two wheel drive models, you will see that Honda left the mounting tabs for the differential intact on the two wheel drives. This wasn't to make it easy for a swap, but to savemoney by offering the same frame for both models.

To convert the two wheel drive to four wheel drive, you will end up spending closer to $1500.00

You will have to buy and/or replace the following componets.[and maybe more]
Differential
BOTH axles
BOTH knuckles
BOTH lower A-arms
BOTH brake assemblies
BOTH wheel hubs
Front drive shaft
Front engine cover for the four wheel drive
Complete transfer case

ALL THESE PARTS ARE SOLD SEPERATELY AND WILL RUN WELL OVER A THOUSAND DOLLARS. NOT INCLUDING THE SMALL PARTS LIKE BEARINGS,SEALS,CIRCLIPS,SNAPRINGS,WASHERS,BOLTS,ET C,ETC,ETC.

You would be better off buying a four wheel drive from the beginning.

If you already bought this machine and want four wheel drive, take the money and the two wheel drive and trade it for a four wheel drive.

The 4X4 has a reduction gear which gives it a little more low end grunt, that the 2X4 doesn't have. So like he said, you would be replacing the transfer case too.

The 2X4 is a kick to ride. The handling is very sporty. Close to the 300EX in some ways. If you can pick up one cheap, get it and enjoy the ride.

Well after a little more research, this looks more like a bad idea than I thought. Cost wise, it's probably over 1k and that's just the parts. Nevermind that doesn't include the 4x4 stickers for the sides and rear..

Thanks to all who took a look at this idea and those that replied.
