very common question...but also the most important
Here is how i personly break in new engines:
1. Let idle for 5 min, then shut down and let cool for 30 min.(this lets heat bleed into the cooling fins)
2. start it up and put around gently for about 10-15 min then let it cool another 30 min
3. you now can have some fun but avoid lugging it or reving it up to high, and no full throttle.
4. after 2 tanks you can floor it but dont hold it there for long
5. after 5 tanks you are free..just change the oil and let er rip..

Keep it simple. Three rules for the first (and second, if you patient) tank of gas. No lugging, no WOT, and vary your rpms often. Everything else is fair game. Your 4-wheeler isn't that fragile.........relax. Now, get out of here you knucklehead and go have fun!

Remember to change the oil and filter at 10 hours. (the book says 20, but the first oil service is one of the most important)
Also, use the oil from the Honda Dealer. It's not that expensive considering , one your doing it yourself, saving on labor charges, and two, your not using 5 quarts or more of oil like in a car.

My friend broke his in by doing somersaults down a pretty good sized hill, then cartwheeling it a couple of times down a blacktopped road. It is his first ATV, and apparently thought he was invincible. He found out differently...the HARD way. I wouldn't recommend this for you though. This type of breakin is only for extremely INexperienced riders, that have brains the size of a peanut.
