Aaen hop up underway
#1
Hi All,
I said I'd post the results of my Aaen hop up.
My 99 SCR 500 and 00 SCR 500 have been running just about dead even, so the bench mark after hop-up is easy.
Well, I added the first pieces to my 00 SCR 500. This includes the pipe, aggressive clutch kit, HD belt and K&N filter.
I am not thrilled. The 00 comes harder out of the hole, and has more snot at low end, but the 99 took me at top end. I'll assume that the clutch needs to be better dialed in, but I have done as directed, and did not expect to trade top end for low end. The clutch work was done by a friend with snowmobile clutch experience, as I have not worked on them in 15 years, and then only barely.
The roller kit is still on it's way, as is the steering damper. The 42mm carb is looking better now, as they say this adds 5 hp and serious top end. But shoot, I've got $660 in parts so far, and the carb and effort will push my playful investment up around $1000.
Don't get me wrong, the low end improvement means that I'll keep this set up and add to it. It's just not exactly what I was hoping for, because my stock 99 now has "an advantage" and after $660, I wasn't expecting this.
And I still have (nearly square) stock wheels.
Any suggestions for the STRONGEST wheels on earth for this machine? I weigh in at 265 and fly blind in the woods. My wheels are laughably bent, but still holding air.

Rich,
Geez, what can you expect for putting in a measly $1000. Come back and see us after you've put $3000-4000 in it (LOL)!
Seriously though, $3000-4000 is about what I have in mine, not counting the price of the quad. I still don't understand why people expect that much more horsepower out of a 4 stroke. You could try a hotter cam or have your motor bored out, but you're talking serious bucks either way. The larger carb is the way to go for more top end and quicker throttle response. The roller clutch is the way to go for secondary clutching needs.
About the rims, you're going to run into serious bucks to replace them with either reinforcing rings or beadlocks. You could even try some of the new rolled edge rims from Douglas or ITP. Look to pay around $100-120 PER wheel. Still it's not as much about the wheels as the tires. The best thing you can do in the mean time is to get some serious tires on your quad. Those Titans really stink because of their 2 ply construction. Get your self some Holeshot XCTs in 6 ply.
Hope this helps!

HI Mike,
Nice reply, thanks.
I didn't think I was asking much, since I have been generally satisfied with the machine in "butt-stock" form. I just didn't expect to lose anything as I spent $. Wrong, huh?
Okay, so the carb will be ordered this week.
Thanks for your comments about tires. I did not realize the stockers were bad, and 2ply versus 6 ply seems like a losing comparison no matter how I try to rationalize not spending the bucks. (I am a miser in some ways and a spending fool in others)
Okay, could you elaborate on "reinforcing rings or beadlocks." I hate to be ignorant, but, I don't know what either term means.
Great shots on your web page! (I had to lower them tunes, since I'm viewing at work, surrounded by folks that actually ARE working)
Is it a Weisco piston or is that a misspell?
Thanks again for the helpful info!

Rich,
Reinforcement rings are nothing more than aluminum rings welded to the outside fronts and inside and outside of the rear wheels. They only keep the rim from being dented. This is usually done to aftermarket wheels as stock wheels are usually too thin to be welded.
Beadlocks on the other hand help keep the tire on the rim by actually bolting it on. Instead of using a bead and flange to keep the tire on the wheel, the use a ring of aluminum and a pattern of bolts to keep the outside portion of ther wheel and tire together. The beadlock acts like a reinforcing ring also.
The rolled wheels have the flanges bent over towards the inside (by the tire) form a sort of reinforcement ring, without being as unsightly as the older reinforcement rings. However, with this set-up you can effectively have reinforcement rings all the way around your quad especially on the inside of the front wheels.
The piston is in fact a Weisco.
More than happy to help you out!

There are so many different settings you can choose from for the rear clutch so tuning becomes a process. My current clutch setup has taken a bit of the top. I ride with Honda 300ex and other no frills bikes so i'm not to dissapointed. It is getting warmer around here so i am going to readjust the rear clutch. I have a tach now which is pretty important when it comes to clutch tuning. I currently have an Aaen Blue rear spring set to the 2nd hole in the sheave and roller housing. This is suposed to give you great acceleration and good backshifting. Since the acceleration is great i am going to set it more for back shifting which would give me back some of the top end i lost. I like the engagment speed so with the tach i can monitor where the RPM's are supposed to be. If needed i will order some extra flyweights ( Lighter and Heavier ) so i can keep the RPM's where i like it. From a stand still the motor hits 7000 RPM's. It feels the strongest there. I have been told that it is too high but it feels great.
The carb will make a big difference but it was a pain to install. The carb gives you instant throttle response, harder accelaration and more top end.

Chris - 7,000 isn't too high at all, it's normal. My SP500 is turning that right now and I expect that we'll be even higher. We still haven't finalized the clutching, but the carb has worked well. It's rich in the mid range on t he top clip, with a 155 on top. It helped quite a bit even though it's not as sharp in the middle as I'd like it. We can't find another leaner needle, so we have decided to open up the engine a bit with the SP500 cam and a Wiseco 10.5:1 piston using the stock bore size since I only have 225 miles on it. The DynoJet people have told us that the cam will bring the needle jetting around to where it needs to be on the mid-clip. The Wiseco rep told us that this setup will get us about the same rear wheel hp as the HO which will be a vast improvement over the measly 18 rear wheel hp that these things usually crank. It's not bad really if we can get a 40-50% increase in rwhp over stock. I just ordered the cam and piston/gaskets today.

That sounds great Jack ! I actually have a picture of that puppy in my office that i enlarged and printed with my inkjet.
The sportsman deserves a 600cc or bigger i think. Especialy since they made the motor so tame. That would turn those tires nice.

Thanks Chris,
I'll look for a blue spring and adjust as you describe in my tuning. The carb may wait a little, I dunno.
The machine really does leap outta the hole better now...the more I ride, the more I like...

Beforey ou buy the spring, just remember a blue spring is different everywhere, make it an Aaen blue spring or verify that's it's the same thing.
I talked to Olav on the phone, and he said he stock or modified 500 I could use the stock spring with roller and didn't reccamend another. Maybe he just old me wrong, and thought I was talking about somthing else.
