P650 EPI clutch springs--my opinion.

Just put the Black KSS3 spring in my driven clutch and the red DRS12 spring in my drive clutch. Took about 45 minutes to do both. As stated in another post, you don't have to remove your drive clutch to install the spring. Remove the drive clutch bolt, the eight bolts that hold your clutch cover plate on, and the spring is right there. Easy. You have to remove your driven clutch to install the spring and you need a clutch spring compressor tool. Put the driven clutch on the spring compressor, compress the spring and remove the snap ring that holds the spring seat on. Back off the spring compressor, and remove the old spring. New spring installation is the reverse. Put everything back together and you are ready to rock!
Now, with all this said and done, here is my opinion of these springs. The Black KSS3 spring. Worth every penny. It backshifts way quicker than with the stock spring. Seems to grab better right off the line. I like it.
The red DRS12 spring. Engages about 300 rpm higher than the stock spring. It engages HARD, and I do mean hard. If you want your 650 for strictly ***** to the wall riding, get it. If you are a rock crawler or like your 650 because of it's fluid power transfer, keep your stock spring. I plan on putting my stock spring back in my drive clutch. The red was too nasty for my riding conditions.
Here's how I grade them.

DRS12Red spring:

Just my opinion.

Thanks for the info. I did not know you did not have to remove the drive pulley.
Did you actually test ride your 650 with the stock drive springs and the black driven spring? I may want to try it. If you did test it this way, does it kill top speed? Give you more low speed power.

Nyroc, haven't had too much time to ride it with the new springs in there. Just took it for a quick rip after I put them in. I can feel the black spring doing it's thing as when you are on the gas, and then off, and then back on again, the power seems to be there a little sooner than with the stock spring. The red spring is just too aggressive. If you like how the power comes on as smooth as silk, then you don't want this spring. I'm gonna put my stock drive spring back in on the weekend as I like the ultra smooth power transfer. I'll let you know how it works with the stock drive spring and the black driven spring.

The black driven spring KSS3 in combination with the standard drive spring gives you more low speed power, better back shift and definatelly less belt slippage, excelent with my 26" ITP. You do loose a "little" top end speed but I find this insignificant. I have tried the red spring with the black spring and found it too aggressive (hard hitting at engagement RPM), a lot harder on gas and a significant loss of speed right through the RPM range; this combination would probably be good with monster tires (28" dia.). Overall I am quite happy with the black driven and standard drive spring..........MJSTX

Thanks MJSTX. Sounds like we have the same opinion on this setup. I really didn't like how hard it hits with the red spring. If they ever have a mud bog or a drag race around here, I would probably put the red spring back in just to give it that extra jump off the start, but for everyday driving, I'll take the stock drive spring anyday.
With all this said, I read in the service manual that there is a spacer that fits under your drive clutch spring for running at higher elevations. I think I will machine a couple of these shims at different thicknesses and try them just for laughs and giggles. You never know if it will help or hurt. The reason I am going to try this is that the red spring is considerably longer than the stocker, hence the increase in rpm to get it to engage. If a guy was to come somewhere in between the two, I wonder what that would give a guy? Enquiring minds want to know!

Hello all, I have 28 M/T titan's on my p650. Do you think that the red spring or yellow spring would be a better set up for me. I plan on ordering the black spring but don't want to waste my money on the red or yellow spring thank's for the advise.

WeBediggn/ I would think that it would depends on your riding style. One thing I have done to my machine to allow the clutch/belt to run cooler and hopefully get more miles on my belt is to drill seven one inch holes at the upper most part of the exhaust cooling duct. You can do this by removing the air filter cover, the portion of the duct that I drilled is right below the air cleaner, the holes are drilled right at the top of the duct. Just from observation (no actual measurement taken) you get more air flow and heat escaping from the from the exhaust...........MJSTX

Webediggn, IMO the stock drive spring will do just fine. Like I said at the beginning of this post, if you ride it like you stole it 24/7, definitely put in the red or yellow, but if you like the fluid starts and linear power transfer your stock setup enjoys, leave it stock. I would definitely put the black spring in the driven clutch no matter what size tires I was running.
