What are the top speeds of both?

 

the 400 top speed can be 65-68,the 500 is maybe 3-4 mph slower...

 

Stock for stock, the 500 is a little faster on top end. Modify them and the 400 whips it good.

I'd say they run about 65-70 mph depending on your terrain. Who knows how accurate the Polaris speedometer is, but the 500 Scrambler 4x4 will bury it with both stock and 20" rear tires. Whatever that's worth...

the 500 faster on top end? in stock form,possibly yes,the 500 have only 2 ponies more than the 400 scram,but the ratio(weight/power) become the balancing factor,the 500 is heavier,so i let made your mind about it for the overall performance differences,personnaly i make my mind on the '99 model,maybe the NEW ones (500) have some hops-up,but again it depend on a lot of factors...

 

My 500 will do 68 mph on pavement, its stock. Not sure about the 400...

 

i'm looking at buying a fast sport quad to compete with my freinds 400ex. i was shocked to see that the 500 scram only did high 60's[img]i/expressions/face-icon-small-sad.gif[/img] hell, my 700sp will do more than that...does polaris make a 4 stroke that will out run a 400ex????

 

No, but I've been beat more than once buy a piped sport 400. With the auto oil-injection, it's just as easy to use as a 4 stroke. If I got a polaris sport quad, and I am looking for one for a second quad for my friends to use (auto tranny is good for beginners), I'd get the 400. This is coming from a 400EX rider. Take it for what it's worth, but I've never been beat by a 500 scrambler. My bike is stock, except the mods listed in my signature.

 

If u really wanna kill ur frinds 400EX wait for a predator. I'v heard from the pros that it can keep up with a DS 650

 

Don't listen to your polaris speedo or any speedo on a quad. Get yourself a GPS for less than $100. They have a feature that lets you put it in your pocket, go for a run, and it shows you the fastest you went. We had a Sportsman that the speedo said 60 and we were only going 53 according to the GPS. By the way my sport will only do 70 with all of these mods so i doubt a stocker will do 68. Unless my GPS is off.
