The neighbors are selling a 1991 trx250x. It's in great shape. Are these quads as reliable as other Hondas? Any known issues or things peculiar to this one I should check?

I had one a couple of years ago. It was a good machine. Like all Honda's you need to check for frame cracks behind the footpegs and around the frame welds. Mine never had any problems.

 

They're a great machine with a bullet proof engine.

 

I also used to own a 250X (first quad I ever owned).

It was EXTREMELY reliable, and a real kick to ride on trails, and in the woods!

Not enough power for the sand though.

My girl's sister has one, and has for like 12 years, maybe longer and has never had any troubles. They, like any kick start honda, can be a pig when it's cold, but that's par for the coarse. It is a great starter machine, very forgiving and fun on trails, in the mud, etc. They are a very good all around machine for a first quad.

 

yeah i have ridden a 250x and they ride just like a 300ex. there isn't much difference between them so a bunch of stuff that you can put on a 300 you can but on the 250x. and with the mods out you can make them go along at a pretty nice speed. i see 250x's whip 300's all the time. if its in nice condition you can't go wrong with it.

 

i own a 250x and i love mine. i wanted more power out of the stock bore so i put a wiesco high dome piston in mine. the only thing that i dont like about it is that if the cjain pops of it can damage the side crankcase cover, just keep it adjusted right and youll be ok. everything off of a 300ex frame and top end wise will bolt right up to it. other than the chain thing its a great bike, reliable, way fun to ride.

 

don`t they have eletric start on this quad? what about reverse?

Reverse: Yes.
