by installing skid plates on our Big Bear, will it become prone to over heating? the reason i ask is b/c one of our riding buddies put skid plates on his honda 300 4x4, and his "oil temp" light kept coming on untill he took the skid plates off.

I'm not reall sure, but if you have enough oil, and your quad is in good running condition, i can't see it causing a problem

I have a Wolverine and I put full skids on it. I ride it hard all day in the summer heat and don't have overheating problems. It should make no difference if you have a skid plate

I have the Highlifter skidplate package and I love it. the bottom plate gives you excelent protection and if you want the dimondplate bash and oil cooler plates add a real cool custom look IMO.
