"Tiny Tach" tachometer for the 650
#1
I bought and installed a Tiny Tach digital tachometer (model 2C) on the 650. It works good and is a good value for the money, $40 US. Upsides - cost, clear display and very easy to install. Downsides - it's powered by an internal battery that's good for 5 years, but then you have to toss the whole unit. It also has a 1 1/2 second response delay which makes it no good for checking manual tranny shift points, but it's not a big deal with a belt drive machine. A good addition to go with Bearman's new CDI (hint, hint, Bearman). The High Lifter analog tach is alot nicer but too expensive for my Canadian dollers. Anyone else tried these tachs? We have tried two or three of them, great value, but they were so small we couldn't read them easily when we were pulling. They would be ok for getting RPM readings for clutching purposes.
I finally bought a digitron tach. It does up to four functions and it is a playback tach. We made a run, then play it back or we can down load it to my laptop and chart different scenarios.

Shotgun, you are way over my head with that. But, I guess if you are in competition you do what it takes to win.
I have never used a tach. I think I would get more benifit from a temp gauge. Has anyone tried a temp guage yet?

One of the function of the digitron is temp, we use it all the time.
To clarify what we use the tach for, on a stock p650 you get the most Hp at 6500 RPM's, so when we make a run pulling (atv pulls, see camera at left), we want our RPM to be at 6500. Each pulling event is different, track conditions, weight on drag sled, any changes we do to the bike, even tire pressure. We will make some pratice runs and then play back the run on the tach. If the RPM's are are 6000 for example we lighten the clutch weights, this will bring our RPM back up to 6500. This way we are always making the most Hp we can.
This is why, if people put larger, heavier tires on, they are probably down on RPM's and need to lighten there clutch weights, but need a tach to find that out.
Sorry for making it seem so comfusing.

I wish I had a digital camera. I mounted it on the right side handle bar plastic cover, on the half closest to the driver, out toward the throttle. I found a round rubber spacer, 3/8" diameter by 1/4" thick, and ground one flat side at an angle. I put the spacer under the left screw between the tach and the bar cover plastic to angle the tach toward the driver. It fits and looks really good.

That seems like a great place to mount, I'd like to see that, all the people that pull have tiny tachs, they have them taped to their tanks...er where their tanks should be.
If you get near a camera, post it, it sounds good.
