Default Help concerning the Recoil Starter for 97 trailblazer....

I have a 97 polaris trailblazer which I've got disassembled. I lost compression last fall and thought it needed new rings
and a few other things checked. So now that i've got the engine pulled from the frame i'm getting into all kinds of new
things. My problem that i encountered last night was pulling the recoil starter off the block.
Instead of removing just the black pull starter cover i started to remove the whole side underneath the
recoil cover. This way the spring will stay intact and i also wanted to see inside
where the oil feeder bolt hole was opening to.... but the large shell under the pull starter cover
would not come of after I removed the 6 or more bolts.... annnnd...
i thought it was bolted at the end of the shaft like the Clyde(sp) book had
shown... but of course it could have been a different model shown in the book...
and the instructions didnt quite match the model... so i still dont know.
Anyway..... i've already pulled the black sheet metal cover off and the large
white plastic wheel holding the rope has unspun...
Now I'm wondering HOW DO I GET THE WHITE PLASTIC WHEEL OFF? ....
I havent a clue to how i go about removing the plastic wheel off whatever it's spining on....
It's not a nut... and i can't stop it from spinning internally... Soooo.... that's where i'm at..
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated...

1 question. Why pull the whole motor apart if you only needed rings. A top end rebuild is so easy to do on a 2 stroke and you dont even need to take the engine out of the frame. The bottom usually never has to be rebuilt unless you have a major problem. Usually if you lose compression, it either blew a head gasket or you burnt up the piston. Just wondering why the entire engine is being tore down.

I realize that now..... but this being my first time.... wellllll... i thought i'd do it the hard way....
and i wanted to get the feel of how everything is holding together....
(now it will probably fall all apart after i put it together)
Also ... with only 60 lbs compression.... i never did see a major malfunction.... the piston and rings
look as expected and there was defineatly no blown head gasket..... so...

But I've taken the housing under the black sheet metal recoil cover off and i've found a broken spring
that looks like's it been there for a long time dicarded in the bottom corner... hmmmmm

Where do i get an exploded view for a model this old (97)...???
I know you can get the last few years on the Polaris Web page but i havent seen the one for this year.

My service manual is a 99 model, I'll look into it for you and see what I can see. If the outer recoil housing came off and left the starter pulley there, it would have to be locked on by a bolt, nut,or clip of some sort. In most engines and cases the starter pulley stays in the recoil housing with the spring as well, then pulls off as a unit. Look at it real good and I'll see what I can find out,Bubba
