Pred not hitting rev limiter?
#1
Just wondering, I have heard that when the Pred hits the rev limiter you should know it, traits being that the engine falls flat on its face. Mine doesn't seem to do this, 2nd gear pinned throttle on relatively flat ground it pulls up to a point and then just stops pulling any harder, but keeps going at that speed and power. I suppose it may be possible that it just isn't getting up to 9005 rpm, but I'm not sure why. I am at about 500 ft, everything is stock except for 13 tooth front sprocket. Any similar experiences or enlightenment? There's not a second stop on the throttle is there, and I'm just being a wuss and not pushing hard enough?!? Thanks! I have had my Predator for a little over a month now, and was thinking the exact same thing, until this weekend. I hit the rev limiter in second on a very loose and muddy trail. I have a HMF pipe and jetted to a 155 main, and mine runs great, but I just got in a 13t sprocket, and I too am curious to the difference you noticed. I really am afraid that I wasted money, because I can leave it in 2nd gear most of the time now on the trail. How much different is it with the smaller front sprocket?
Thanks,
Ryan

I live in south central Washington state. After putting on the 13 tooth the I noticed the quickness increased dramatically (as expected). I now start in 2nd gear pretty much everywhere, sand, dirt, whatever. I like the gearing much better this way, it allows me to use 3rd quite a bit more, and also helps when I am riding with my buddy and his raptor, which will lug around all day in 2nd gear (before I would be shifting between 1st and second a lot when following just putting around). I haven't tried it but I think a 15 is gonna be pretty tall. Depends on how you ride though I guess. I don't do tons of long high speed runs, but lots of start and stop kinds of things, so lower has been great.

see 2min I want to be able to use 1and2 a lot more efficently I too notice with the stock 14 tooth I'm constantly shifting I dont want to have to bypass any gears as such in your case like you said you dont use first anymore you start off in 2nd What I want is to be able to use all the gears more evenly 1and2 feel like they wind out to quick until you hit third then it pans out do you know what I mean but then the only ? is will this 15tooth effect 3rd through 5th gears thanks for any help on this..

Let me rephrase that....I do use first gear still but usually only in tight places, turning around on harder ground, etc. The way I read your post is that 1st and 2nd get used up too quick, and then 3rd is too fast or not torquey enough. Is this what you mean? A 15-tooth sprocket is going to stretch out your gears more, allowing you to stay in a certain gear longer. The problem that I see is you will be restricted to the lower gears for any kind of hill, (probably 2nd and maybe 1st, depending on if you have a run at it or not) and your acceleration is going to suffer. I think you will find that you will be needing to keep the engine revved up all the time. You may have a hard time pulling 5th gear. Paddle tires will not like the higher gears either. Don't know how fast you ride, but on trails and the track or shooting hills at the dunes you may not be hitting 3rd thru 5th much anymore. Also don't expect to wheelie much, if at all. This motor is great but its not a torque monster by any means, rather it likes to get power from high rpms.

Well i put 22' realters on my bike, this pretty much is like putting on a 15tooth front sprocket. TOO TALL! I found first alot more usefull, however you'd hit second and it wouldnt be too bad, but you could almost wind it out, hit third, and it would bog a bit...i assume this is cause of the gearing. I put a 13t on the front and im back to stock gearing again. Works great! I have a 38t rear on order..this should get me geared a bit lower again!

Hey all,
I'd be real careful about making the gearing taller on your Predator if you're still stock. I found that shifts into 3rd 4th and 5th would drop the power out of its sweet spot for a bit while the engine caught up in revs. I dropped to the 13 before I piped, jetted and vented the airbox mainly to allow me to stay in that power band through all the gears. After the mods, I found myself revving out too quick in 1st and 2nd and hitting rev limiter in 5th. I went back to the 13 tooth front and the shift points are great now and really match the enhanced power band of the 500cc motor. When I did those mods the mid range power was boosted significantly and the power-band was lengthened. It's almost like Polaris planned on every Predator being piped to take full advantage of the stock gearing.
