I have read several posts that praise clutch kits as the single best performance mod you can make on the Polaris automatic transmission machines. Is this true? How much better take-off can I expect? What brand of kit do Polaris owners recommend?

Honest feedback would be appreciated.

 

I've got a Dalton Big Wheel kit from Rick Ritter on a Sportsman 500HO. 26 Mudrunners. The best $$$ I've spent yet!!! It works great. Easy to install. It lets the motor work better mid to high range. Longer belt life.

Get a kit,WELL WORTH IT
I also have the dalton bigwheel kit.
I also have the HC.
I believe its low to mid thats greatly improved.

A clutch kit will almost always help get the power to the ground better. Polaris tunes their clutches to best suit what they feel is the average rider carrying the average load on what they feel is average terrain. The clutch kit tunes the clutching to your weight, your riding style, and the terrain you usually drive on. Also, any time you make any mods, a clutch kit usually helps. For example, the big wheel kit mentioned is designed to provide more torque to the wheels for turning oversized/aggressive mud tires. Another guy might want a 'speed' kit for more top speed. The kit basically is there to match the machine to what you want of it. If all you do is general, liesurely trail rides, you might think a clutch kit was a waste of money. However, if your riding style involves you wishing for more power to climb that big hill, more grunt to spin your oversized 589s thru that big mudhole, or more acceleration/speed, then a clutch kit is a good way to do it. Since you are making no mods to the engine, the manufacturer should still honor all warranties on it.
