It's happened about three times since I've owned the bike. It happened today. I was riding and powering up a long 300 yd+ hill, pretty steep, in first gear. At about the top of the hill the bike wants to quit. It would be the same sensation if you were on a 2-stroke and needed to rev it up. I have an MBRP slip-on, a UNI filter in the stock airbox, 185 DYNO jet main, needle is on 2nd clip with all spacers underneath. Anybody have any other ideas? Once I get to the top, the bike is just fine no hesitation at all.

 

maybe running out of fuel, sticky float bowl? Was it sputtering or just a decrease in power? Sean

 

It seemed to just be a decrease in power. I thought I was going to have to pull in the clutch and rev it up like a 2-stroke.

 

Kinda sounds like float height might be a bit to high?

 

Pennsylvania hills are pretty tough, you might have too much tire under it with those spider tracks. I like a little slip to keep the revs up and up ontop of the slag if your talking cinders and coal hills.

 

the stock carb has a small gas bowl if the floats are off alittle you could lose power. what would happen to me was i would hold it wide open long enough that the carb just could'nt keep up!! a 45mm carb took care of that problem. the carb on the ds is a street bike carb by design not always up to the abuse of an atv[img]i/expressions/face-icon-small-disgusted.gif[/img]

 

Actually, I had the stock tires on. The other hills we climbed, I did in second and had more than enough power.

 

That might be the case, every once in a while I get some to come out the overflow. I have only about 15 hours on the machine. Do the floats go out of adjustment that quickly. I have had the bottom of the carb off about three times to rejet.

 

If you are starving for power in first or second gear, you are most likely tooo lean. Jump to the DJ 190 with the clip in spot 3 or 4. If you're at a low elevation and your airbox is open, don't be afraid of the DJ 195, as it is very useable.

It could be something else, but low power in low gears on hill climbs is normally a prime indicator of lean.

Had a simular problem when I first got my DS, ended up being the Float adjustment. I first played with the jetting and needle setting but the float is what fixed it. felt like I was choaking the thing when I got to the point I really needed power, once you lost RPM's it was impossible to recover. Smaller hills and flats were fine.
