Default 03 400 weak reverse

I just bought a 03 arctic cat 400 manual and have about 250 miles on it. It is a great machine but i have one problem. Twice now i have gotten stuck and tried to back up but the thing just sits there. The tires won't even turn. Before i had a 98 300 and never had a problem backing up. It also had the option of low range in reverse though. Anyone one else have this problem or any suggestions?

I have seen this complaint either in another forum or in a different thread. For some reason A/C decided not to give the 03's low reverse but the 02's and 04's (I believe) have it.

I also have the same problem. Yeah, Arctic Cat for some unknown reason has left the 03 400 with a high range rev. ... I get stuck way too many times because of this. I put a jet kit and K&N Filter in this bike and it helped a bit. I think AC did a big mistake with this gear. Talked to my dealer and they said that it's too tricky to change the gears in the gearbox $$$!!?$$$. Best to get an older 400 or the 500 may be a 650...

You need to take it back to your dealer if its in warranty if not then you have to adjust the cable or linkage that goes from the bottom of the shifter to the transmission.

Yeh I just bought a 04' 400 manual and did not even think about it not being in low in reverse untill I tried to pull someone out and it just sat there and bogged down. i had a kingquad before this scooter and it had the option of high, low, and superlow. was real nice about that. I love my cat though, If anyone finds out of a way to trick the tranny please post it.

This was the main reason for selling my 400i....gets very frustrating. I used to leave the throttle to the bar (tires bogged, not turning) and tap the gearshift then release it.....just like working a clutch. Ya....not good for the tranny, but jarred the tires loose. Know what you mean about the weak reverse, it would have come in handy several times (like when I was stuck in the middle of a mud hole with no way out but the one I came from). However I figured out how to do this, I have now modified my 03' 400 into a 03' 400 with LOW RANGE REVERSE. My dealer told me that 02 was the last year they had the sub-transmission in the 400, but you could still get the 500 to current date with the same transmission. So from 03-current you have HI-RANGE reverse only. Well fixed that and it works, can play and move my trailer around the yard with NO PROBLEM (well other than the water/mud hole that is over the gas tank). The low range reverse is the same gear ratio as the low range forward 1st gear, but as long as it gets me out of the holes I like it!! And I am running 27" 589s for tires.

How did you mod it so you had low range reverse?
