I found with my 650, I had to drive around and purposely use just the rear brake (when I took delivery, it wouldn't do anything). After a while, the rotor cleaned up (it had rust on it from the factory). Now when you jab the petal, the rear wheels will lock up.

Basically, that brake is just for holding the bike when stopped and for shifting gears. Use the hand brake for driving.......
