While out riding on the may long weekend I developed a severe running rich problem.I mean the thing was pouring out black smoke and once it got hot, you could forget about starting it. The nearest repair shop was a Polaris dealership so being stuck I took it into them. They worked on it for three hours and coun't fix the problem. Good thing they didn't charge for it.
I ended up renting for the rest of the weekend.

After I got back I decided to fiddle. I managed to pick up 2 used carbs from a dealership here. They were the old style but non the less the parts were the same. I changed the valve needle, the needle valve and the diaphram slider and I now believe I have licked the problem.

Anybody else out there had this sort of trouble???/

Does the carburetor have a plunger-style starting enrichment ("choke") system? Sounds like the plunger stuck; probe wouldn't enter its hole, did not shut off raw gas flowing into the carb. The "choke" plunger probe must be straight and centered to enter the hole when the choke lever is in the "off" position; also, the choke cable must move freely and the spring on the carburetor end of the cable must force the probe home when the choke is "off."

I've seen this problem (too rich mixture when the enriching probe stuck in the "on" position) with a Keihin carburetor.

I had this problem on my 96 454. The problem was a (very) small piece of "gasket?" lodged at the end of the plunger. I cleaned the carb 3 times before i found it. I used a Magnifer to see it and spray carb cleaner and a torch tip cleaner to get it out.
