Hi All

Does anyone have the alignment procedure for a 2002 500 Auto ACT? I've read the posts from the past but don't quite understand how it would work. I understand tieing off the handlebars to the rear rack so they don't move. One poster said to tape straightedges onto the outside of the tires. I understand how this would give you a general idea, but my question is this.

If the straightedge is longer (say 3 feet) or shorter (say 1 foot) when you measured across the straightedges (side to side) , the measurement would be different depending on the length of the straightedge (The farther from the tire towards the front , the greater (or less) the measurement). Am I not getting this??? I understand what we're trying to accomplish, but exactly where do you measure. Other posters say to measure at some consistent point on the tire.

Any body have the straight poop on this. I understand the correct setting is 1/4 inch toe in for each front tire, which yields 1/2 inch total toe. Is this correct??

I think you do it from the front of the tire.

Of course, this is going to vary based on tire size.

What you really need is the angle of the toe.

I wouldn't think a dealership would have an alignment machine for these things, do they??

Anybody have a shop manual that tells how to do this???

1/8 to 1/4 total toe in is all you want. Measure across rear of front tire at frame height center of tread to center of tread. Then do same at front of tire at the same height. After getting toe in set look down side of tire towards rear tire and see if same amount of tread can be seen on each side. If not move tie rods equal turns to move tires without loosing toe in. Also bounce unit before measuring to unload suspension. When done your tires should be centered side to side and front tires should measure 1/8 to 1/4 inch less in front than in back.

I'll check that out, the dealer replaced my tie rod ends under the recall, and I wondered if he reset the alignment. Even if he says he did I will want to check it.
