Default Has anyone replace a radiator on 2001 AC 500 Manual

Good afternoon !!! I have a 2001 Arctic Cat 500 Manual ATV and I have got to replace the fan and radiator...I have already purchased these items and have disassembled and ready to reassemble, however...After replacing the old fan with new, I wanted to make sure the fan/ motor worked and it did not...Usually when you turn the key on the fan motor kicks on and the fan will start to turn...The fan was working when I took it all apart, but of course the radiator and hoses were assembled. I have checked the fuse and it is still good, I guess my question is, should'nt the fan turn without the radiator and hoses connected?

Other than this minor problem, the cat is all original and I have got about 2000 miles on it and it has never let me down...Do all the fluid changes about every 400 miles and she'll have all 9 lives.......Thanks....Mark (Arkansas)

Shouldnt it be hot before the fan kicks in?? I have a fan switch on my 400i so I can turn it on when I want but it wont come on by itself untill it reaches a certain temp.

I am almost certain that when you turn the key to the on position, the fan kicks on, and it shuts off when you turn the key off. As a matter of fact, the fan stays running constantly on my 500.

I wouldnt think that would be good if the fan stays on in some deep water or mud, Do all the 500's do this?? The 400's hardly ever come on and run really hot that is why I put an override switch on so I can cool it down a bit when I want (before going into deep water, or just whenever)

My 500s fan only runs when the motor heats up. If its below 50 degrees and Im moving atleast 10 mph the fan never runs. if Im working it hard, dragging stuff around, or its hotter out then it runs more frequent

Maybe it is me, but I thouhgt it came on when the ignition was turned on..I have called the local dealer/service and he is looking into that for me..When I do in fact find out, I will let ya'll know. I have had my Cat in water just over the front rack and never did hear the fan hitting the water, but then again, never really thought to listen...Once the water gets over the gas tank however, the Cat does not do so good...Have sunk mine twice !!! Not on purpose, just one of those huge holes that were not supposed to be there..I live on Bull shoals Lake in Arkansas and do a lot of riding around the lake and up the creeks, etc..

Has anyone got the 2001 AC manual on CD ? I believe the manual is around $60 at dealer..
But i am sure it is the paper manual..

Trey,

I have an 01 400 manual. I am guessing they are the same quad just different motor based on looking at the parts diagrams at Alpha Sports. Both quads use the same diagrams save for notes on the 400 vs. 500 in the ENGINE AND EXHAUST section. Any way my fan comes on as soon as I turn the key to run.

Brent,

I thought I remembered hearing that fan kick on as soon as I turned the key to start...Thanks for confirming....Have you been happy with your Cat? I've been pretty happy with mine...Looking into the new 650 but own the 500 and don't really want the monthly payment again....Have you done any modifications to your Cat? I am looking to get a little more speed out of mine...

Thanks,
Trey

I have only had it about 6 weeks and only had a chance for a couple of rides, only one of which was over anything other than more or less flat farm land. Given that, I love it. I have had to reacustom myself to a quad, I have not been on one but a few times in the past 15 years. Back then most (like 99%) of my riding was on dirt bike. I decided to buy used, and avoid the payment, because I wanted to make sure I could use it for what I envisioned plus I wanted to get a feel for real riding spots. Any way, it is dead stock. I have been toying with getting a jet kit but have yet to decide. It runs well as it is, I think a rejet could pep it up a tad, but to be honest I don;t want to start dinking with it. As soon as you start, well you know the rest....

I called the dealer and he finally let me look at the manual to answer my questions..Yes the fan comes on when key is turned on...So now...I have got to find out why the fan motor worked before i disassembled and why it does not work now....I have checked the fuses and all is good, probably should use a test light to find out if the fan motor is getting juice. I'll keep you posted on the progress.
