I have a 04' 400 manual, the only time I've had any problems with my machine bogging down is in reverse, due to the fact that there is no way to have it in low and in reverse (serious flaw in my opinion). I did have a suzuki king quad before this scooter and it had super low, low, and high, I loved all these options and coming from this scooter to the arctic cat I have noticed that the arctic cats high range is very high on these 400's. all I do when riding is put it in low when im coming up to anything that could bog it down, this works great and your not straining the scooter this way.
