Supertrapp- worth it???
#1
For you guys with the supertrapp exhaust (and jet and filter for some). Was this modification worth the money? I'm starting to consider it once again, and I'd like to know what type of performance gain there is. Noticeable, very noticeable, hardly noticeable, etc.

It can't hurt! Today I opened up a stock AC muffler and it is one of the most restrictive mufflers I have ever seen. For one the exhaust travels the length of the muffler twice before exiting, the input side coming from the engine is pinched off to about an half inch diameter inside the muffler and the output runs through about a 3/4 inch pipe before exiting the muffler. So the muffler is heavily restricted for the start. Heaven forbid you ride in the mud like I do then you are in for problems. My cat has been cutting out since early this year and I have tried everything to fix it. Today me and the torch had a heart to heart with the muffler and my problems are gone

Hey N1TEOWL, which cat do you own and if you don't mind saying, exactly what did you do to the muffler. Also, aren't the cat exhaust stainless?
I've got the torch and the mig welder. Just a thought, could I use the bandsaw instead of the torch? Thanx...BadCat

Andy,
I believe the gain was noticable when installed (pipe, jet, filter) My biggest seat of the pants gain was mid-range. A real difference coming out of a corner on the trails for my Automatic. The power loss was very noticable after I went back to the stock set up. Only downside was the extra noise, sucker is loud. It was worth it too me.It won't make the Cat as fast as a Grizzly but did increase the usable power on the trails.

Hey badcat, at the end of the muffler there is a factory weld. Well I cut the weld, pulled out about three mudholes worth of dirt and a couple of baffles. Then I noticed that the pipe inside coming from the engine was pinched and restricted air flow massivly, so i cut the pipe behind the pinch and then replaced the end peice I cut off earlier. I also cut about 2" off the length of the muffler, and replaced the 1" opening with 1.5" exhaust pipe
BTW I have a Arctic-Cat 500

Andy, I bought my supertrap from Mikeslaby, finally installed last weekend. It does make a lot of extra noise, even with only eight discs installed, but the increased noise is worth the gain in mid-range power it produced. I am still running stock jetting and air filter. I own a 2000 500 manual shift.
My vote worth it ? Yes
My wifes vote? No
oo 500 cat, H/L lift kit, AC shock covers, 1.5" spacers, Supertrap ISD2, AC stick guards, Jet kit, ITP Magnums and 28" Outlaws on their way!!

Sure BONER I can get some pics. I was going to get some during the work but forgot the camera. I am planing on putting a snorkel on in the near future, but right now I'm trying to get a chevy LUV 4x4 going with a new engine and a set of 31 inch Boggers (to play with during the cold months!)
BTW look in the next couple of months for pics of the torque sensing front end off my cat I plan on taking it back apart and tightning it up for a more "locked" effect

Thanks a bunch Mike and TRX200. I noticed that Supertrapp had the AC 500 listed now on their homepage. I also called Rocky Mountain and I think they are going to start carrying it fairly soon. Then I'll get it for a lot cheaper than highlifter who quoted like $220 or $240 for just the Supertrapp. The guy at highlifter did however, say that some guy he knew was taking his AC to Dynojet to have them make a needle (which they don't right now) for it. If that comes out, I'll get it too. That should improve the jet kit over just a bigger main (or whatever it is. I don't understand that much about carbs just yet). The filter on top of that should just about do it for any performance mods. Either way, I think you guys have swayed me on the IDS2. I got my quarterly bonus last week and I think I'll keep it around until that thing gets in stock with Rocky Mtn.
