Hello

When running at full throttle, in any gear, the engine hesitates as if its not getting gas for a second.

I've replaced the gas filter, cleaned the air filter AND drained the carb bowl to no avail!

If anyone has any ideas, some help would be appreciated!

have you checked you vent hose? could be pinched or plugged just enough to cause a fuel feed problem at high revs... or perhaps the idle is set too hight and its flooding itself at high rpms ( mine came like that from the dealer, was set for cold weather starts and as soon as the motor warmed up it would stall itself at high rpms ) just a thought

My 500 was doing that exact thing also. Seems I had a good bit of mud in the muffler. Try unbolting the muffler and removing it then see if it still cuts out when running just a straight pipe. If this fixes it you might have to replace the muffler with a new one or refer to this thread on what I did to my muffler

sounds to me like your just hitting the rev limit. However I could be wrong but my rev limiter stops high revs in each gear just as you described. When it maxs out its rpm it acts as if its running out of fuel until you back off just a tad then it resumes as normal right?

The service manual list's nine conditions:
1. Rev limiter
2. Valve springs
3. Vavle timing
4. Cam and or rocker arms
5. Spark plug gap too narrow
6. Ignition coil
7. Float level too low
8. Air filter element dirty
9. Fuel hose obstructed

Hope these help you.

I Have a Cat 300 4x4 and it started doing the same thing after jumping of into some water. As best I could tell, the fuel metering rod had slipped out and was sitting in the carb at an angle. It ran fine till I would hit the throttle hard, then it choked out. If this is the case, then you have to take the carb out of the machine and take the bronze cover off the top. Inside is a spring that sits on top of a small plastic button that sits on top of the metering rod. If the rod is sitting at an angle, pull the spring out and flip the carb up-side down to get to the metering rod and the plastic button. Put the rod in the center hole and put the plastic button on top of the rod. Put the spring on top of the button, and put the bronze cover back on the top of the carb. If this is your problem, then this should fix it.

I was having the same troubles with my 454. As I went along the problem continued and did nothing but get worse. It was also backfiring everytime you would let off the throttle at almost any speed above 20. All I did was change the spark plug. Now it is running like new.
