Speedometer
#11
Well i had a look at it. I took the cable off the gear box and i turned the wheel and no problem i went to look at the end of the cable and as i whipped it up bam out comes the end of the cable and it hit me right in the face with a bounch of grease. so i guess it won't be to hard to fix. Just dents my pocket $60 for a new cable.

Vmax,
Sorry to hear about that. No I have not fixed mine yet. I have all the parts and gaskets I need ( I think) just never gotten around to tackling it yet. I think it is low on my priority list as I have an hour meter installed for maintenance purposes.
So other than the speedo not working its not a problem.
My main issue was if I took the time to fix it there is no gaurantee it will not do it again. As lubrication is an issue for the speedo gear box. If it does go out on me too far from home and I have no way of getting the metal shavings out of the machine the whole engine goes.
I am going to wait for that time when it is necessary to tear the engine down to do the job. I estimate that I have around 5500 miles on it after the tip of the shaft breaking and I have not had any more trouble with it (estimating from the total miles on my 400). I think the hour meter is like 186hrs or something. (My next service is around 200 hrs).
I think I paid about $110 for the shaft and another $150 or so on gaskets, seals and such. I have not purchased a new speedo gear housing which I think is probably another $100. If you know your way around a wrench you could probably do it in about 20hrs of work. (I think the hour meter was $25 and took 15 minutes to install)
I just don't need a speedo all that much. When I need to know total distance traveled I use my GPS.
