Default battery power gone?

hello
was riding my cat yesterday and it died!!!! No power to anything!! first checked all fuses (nothing wrong) made sure i had all switches on , again nothing wrong!! I wasnt about to get pulled out by a brand x machine, thats all that are around here , plus i was in a place i wasnt even sure my cat could get out even under its own power lol . At last thought i remembered i had a recoil starter , pulled it and she fired right off, went on to finish the ride , and yes it pulled right out with the new tires and wheels i put on. It seems like the charging system isnt working or grounded right. We needed the lights on the way home and they would be on half decent at idle but dim down at throttle speed . Checked battery once back at the garage and battery had 12.25 volts , voltage stayed the exact same even when reving the throttle, but dash lights and lights still flicked , and machine still would do anything on its own . Help its soon time to plow snow..........

Sounds like you have a charging problem, you should get 13-14Vdc out of it when it's revved any amount. Check all your connections, it's not blowing fuses, so it's not shorted anywhere. I'd look at the voltage regulator, and check the connections first. 12.25Vdc is a little low, but it tells me that all the cells are functioning properly.

i had a similar problem and it was the voltage regulator, it would die and the lights would dim down. it was being grounded and was draining my battery though. the voltage regulator was $80 and that was for a arctic cat 300. if the problem ends up being something else ,please let us know for future refrence. thanks.

found problem , it was the main fuse on the positive battery cable, seems to be something to do with my heated grips , the wires seem to get very hot going to them , i followed cats directions to put them on will see if it happens again. What a pain it is to get the main fuse on a trv!!!! they sure didnt think about that when they extened the frame

Glad you found the problem 2rider. Hate to say, "never say never" but the problem may occur again since all you did was to change the fuse. Wires getting hot indicates a problem. Maybe you might try unpluging the hand warmers, run the engine for a while then check the battery again for voltage. If the battery is up to full power, your hand warmers may be defective or wired wrong. But for sure, it sounds like something is stealing power from the batt.
Nothin' worse than having trouble when you're trying to have a good ride. Even if you're plowing snow...
Good luck,
Chuck

If the wires to your grips get hot when you turn on the heaters, means you either have a short or the wires aren't big enough or the battery or charging system have a problem. Low voltage means higher current (amps) means heat. A short means high current.
