ATV purchase

Hi I am hoping you guys can help me. My DH found an 2001 Artic Cat 500 4X4 with 300 miles on it and wants to buy it. The main reason we are getting one is to plow this one comes with a plow. I have read they have brake problems and didn't even know artic cat made 4 wheelers. The guy wants 4200 for it with the plow, what do you guys think?

FYI - My neighbor just purchased a new 2005 AC 400 with plow for around $6200. I think he could have done better if he had shopped around more. Be sure to look at dealer service in your area an of course how well the machine was maintained.

That is about right for the price, but maybe you could talk hi down a little. If it is an Arctic Cat plow (it will be plastic and yellow) they are only about $350 new, so don't let him add on too much because of it. Also, is it an automatic or 5-speed? How big is the plow? Does it have a winch? The Arctic Cat plow does work great though, and it is a lot of fun!
Good luck and welcome!

Yeah, he will probably go to 4000, but for the low mileage, its a pretty decent deal. As long as it hasn't been wrecked and everything is in good shape, its a good deal that is. You could buy that quad for about $5500 on a good deal brand new in 2001. 300 miles is basically nothing. Just past the break in point. Check it out to see if everything still looks fairly new, and if you want it, go ahead. Its a good quad. The brakes on it are good in my opinion. I had a 99 and the brakes were awesome. The footbrake is a piece of crap and most people never used it at all. The hydraulic handbrake was excellent on my 99. I think they still used the same exact Wilwood brakes on the 01 models.
Sometime around 2004 maybe, AC changed to a different kind of brakes. I read somewhere that these sucked. I know firsthand that the old wilwood hydraulics they used on the older models were first rate.
