Default How many 400 cat owners are here..!!

Hey Redcat400 welcome to the site, I have an 03 400i just broke 2000 miles, I have an epi clutch kit, stock size 589's on it, hand and thumb warmers, fan switch, and a moose box on the back, pretty happy with the bike over all, but would like more power (doesnt everyone) we are waiting for a 650 2 up to get another one though. I have some older pics on here (hevent updated in a bit), just click on the little camera under my name. Oh yea and a jet kit on it also.

Bear4570 I have a Dynojet kit in it, just put it in last year, starts easier, and seems to run better over all, as for any power gains, nothing neck breaking, but seems to have better throttle response than before.

I think you have done as much to the 400 as can be done. There just are not that many mods out there for it.

Thanks for the posts, I havn't been on for a while. I have 108 miles on my 05 400 and its a great quad. I get a churp from my belt when taking off from a stop from time to time but I believe that is my fault because I took the belt cover off to clean it out from dust and dirt. (No mud or water). When I rode in WV, I went with 15 other atvs. My Cat was covered with dust, the air filter was brown, dust in the intake + exhaust belt housing, vent hose for carb...ETC. A real mess!!! I don't care for riding in real dusty conditions.

Regarding mods, what mods works the best for the 400?

Has anyone done the exhaust mod and if so, do you need to rejet + put on a K&N filter?

What clutch kit and spring combo do ya recommend?

What mods should I do first and in what order?

Also, Thanks for your post and pics!! Happy trails!!!

Redcat I agree dusty conditions suck, but to answer your questions, all the mods do something to help out so it depends on your money situation, the muffler mod is free and frees up exhaust flow, just cut off the endcap, and drill some new holes through the baffles (I did mine differently, I cut off both ends, took out half the baffles then put the exhaust pipe out the back of the muffler) after I did this I had to rejet (doesnt matter now since I have a jet kit on it) as for a clutch kit I used the epi kit keeps you in power band longer so it helps out in tough situations also. First thing I would personally do is a muffler mod, I had a really bad sputtering problem with mine when I first got it (restrictive exhaust I narrowed it down to) and ever since I did that I can work the bejesus out of it and it doesnt miss a beat. Tires would be my second mod, but I wouldnt get the same ones I have now, I would go with mud lites the 589's are pretty heavy, good tires for a bike with more power but heavy for a 400, I would also stay away from going any bigger than a 25" tire, Then I would get the clutch kit to offset the power loss of the new tires, and lastly the jet kit to get the thing to run tip top. As for a K&N filter, I would stay away from them, just my opinion but do some searches on this site on them and form your own opinion on it though. All these mods are just the order I would do it in, not neceseraily the best but just my opinion on them. A lot of people have snorkled their bikes, but it is something I will stay away from, I dont need to go any deeper than the cat is capable of, I have had water coming ofer the front rack and never drowned her out yet.

+1 on the winch - I just put the full brush guard, (love it) and a Warn 2500 on my '03'. It makes all the difference - especially if you ride alone.

I also just added a rear bumper, (after a 2-day stripped bolt odessy). I also have a Kimpex trunk and an AC tank bag. Haven't done any mods yet as far as engine - going to wait until I get a few hundred more miles on it. I am having an issue with some power-loss up hills and am not sure yet if that's just a temporary condition.

By the way, after you buy your winch, or during, make sure you buy a good tow strap, a couple of shackles and most importantly, a ******-block. It doubles your pulling power.

Enjoy out there!

Mark

"Don't Leave Home Without It!!!!!!!!!" Your winch that is. Both our bikes have them along with their own ****** blocks and straps for wrapping around trees. Plus the 400 has a second ****** block and 200 yards of 3/8" woven climbing rope (strong enough to extend the winch's reach).

Yup newbie here, I bought a 05 400 auto about 2 months ago, so far I really like but I only put 50 miles on it. I do have some questions, after I run it for a while and come to a stop some times it stalls, is this common because its not fully broken in yet, or is there something I can fix. Also some times its hard to shift into reverse or out of reverse into high, going from high to low or low to high is easy.

A few weeks ago I went out with some friends, they had a 05 kodiak 450, 05 kawaski brute force 750, 05 honda rancher, 05 450yfz, and a 400ex. It was fun except in the open fields lol, but when it came to playing in the mud the cat showed what it can do. I am new to the 4wheeler scene so I am unsure on what the cat and and can't do, so I put in in 4 wheel drive, locked the front diff, and gave it like 3/4 throttle, it pulled all the way threw the mud untill the end. I hit a huge tree root and it stoped me, I just backed up in my own tracks and made my own path around the root but still in the mud. Everone thought that I have ridden before but it was really my first time out so I would have to say the cat made a good impression with everyone.
