Yup newbie here, I bought a 05 400 auto about 2 months ago, so far I really like but I only put 50 miles on it. I do have some questions, after I run it for a while and come to a stop some times it stalls, is this common because its not fully broken in yet, or is there something I can fix. Also some times its hard to shift into reverse or out of reverse into high, going from high to low or low to high is easy.
A few weeks ago I went out with some friends, they had a 05 kodiak 450, 05 kawaski brute force 750, 05 honda rancher, 05 450yfz, and a 400ex. It was fun except in the open fields lol, but when it came to playing in the mud the cat showed what it can do. I am new to the 4wheeler scene so I am unsure on what the cat and and can't do, so I put in in 4 wheel drive, locked the front diff, and gave it like 3/4 throttle, it pulled all the way threw the mud untill the end. I hit a huge tree root and it stoped me, I just backed up in my own tracks and made my own path around the root but still in the mud. Everone thought that I have ridden before but it was really my first time out so I would have to say the cat made a good impression with everyone.

Once you get to the 100 mile mark and take it back for oil change and check over (I highly recommend you do this). My dealer only charges for the oil and filter, but check with yours first. Tell them about any problems you are having and they should be correctted under warranty. The stalling engine is probably a low idle setting which you can adjust. Look in the owners manual and there are instructions. In my manual they are on page 138. Then again it could be a mixture adjustment. Mine needed a linkage adjustment and a nut fell off my shift linkage or was missing to start with. Of course we were on a Dec. snow ride at about 3500 feet in 3 feet of snow when it happened, so if it feel of we'll never know if it came loose. Used a plastic tiewrap (zip tie) to hold things together and finish the ride and to get back to the trailer.

Whats rough about them?

I had an 03 400 4x4 IRS for about 3 months then sold it. It really just wasnt my cup of tea. I personally will probably not buy an IRS for quite some time. I won't knock the machine, it was good and reliable, great ground clearance, I just didn't like the way it always wanted to push the front end while turning at anything over about 15 mph. I also thought it rode about the same as my 2001 trailboss SRA so other than the clearance it really had no benefit to me. I just am not ready to give up the fun factor for some ground clearance just yet

I don't have any pics, but I've got a 2003 400 4x4 with hand guards, tank bag, full brush guard, 2500# Warn Winch, Off-Road-Only V-Line, and 28" Mudzillas. It has seen just over 50 on the speedo. I'm not sure how far off the speedo is with the bigger tires though.
My only regret about this one is that I wish I would have just spent the money and bought a brand new one. But till then, this will do the job for me. It's got about 1150 miles on it.

well I have a 05 400 auto as well and I say the first thing after break-in is dump the tires and get a good 6ply tire. You'll save alot of strength turning that thing instead of fighting it. I haven't done much to mine except a KN airfilter w/ precharger and swampwitch tires and synt oil.
I'll have to check into that checkup thing just to make sure things are not going crazy.
