Jim was just trying to recomend better typeing so in the future we will not have to go "what da..." when we read his post.

 

Here is an idea we used on the farm for portable anchors. Get a length of chain, maybe 3 feet or so, the kind with as open of links as you can find, and still fairly lightweight. Get 5 or 6 steel rods that just fit through the links, about a foot or foot and a half long, and weld or have welded, washers on one end, and sharpen the other end a little. Lay the chain on the ground pointing the same direction as the direction you will be pulling. Put a rod through the last link & step/stomp in the rod as deep as you can. Pull the chain snug, move down a few links, and stomp down another rod. Do this through the length of chain for how ever many rods you have. The trick is to keep the chain snug, so it pulls on all the rods at the same time. It also helps to angle the top of the rods slightly against the direction the pull will be coming from. Hook your winch on the last link & pull. A good pair of pliers will help get the rods out. Just lift & twist (maybe someone will come up with a way to use the winch). The best part of this is that it is cheap, simple, and all fits in a PVC drainpipe. Just get a pipe a little longer than your rods, glue an end cap in place, and either put a threaded cap or press-fit a cap on the other, strap it on your rack & you are ready to roll. A salvage yard likely has all kinds of steel rods & maybe even short lengths of chain laying around.

Some good ideas, Farmr123! Might try that, maybe with a sharpened angle iron (instead of rods) variation, to save weight and increase resistance area.
