My 400 was pretty stiff in shifting when I first got it, but after the switch to synthetic oil, it smoothed right out, ran cooler and started easier. Your mileage should get a little better as things wear in, but I wouldn't expect 50 mpg out of it. Try turning your idle down a little. With mine, when I stepped on the heel shifter, I let it up slowly to avoid that big clunk. Turns out the idle was set too high.
