AC 400 MANUAL TRANS ?????????
#1
I have been looking for an atv for my birthday and looked at brp, yamaha, kawasaki, and suzuki. Just the other found a ac dealer looked a basic 400 4x4 sra rear manual transmisson. Was wondering if the is a atv that can take the abuse and be around long term cause the price is right ? I would like to ge the pros and cons ? and if anyone owns this machine problems, mileage , and useage ?

I have an 03 400 Manual, ACT. It's the same rear end as they now call the VP model. Mine has been indestructable so far. I have pics on arcticchat.com. Search the site forums for ACT and you'll see pics of the rear end doing it's thing. Awesome bike. Reverse is geared a little high, and i believe the new ones are full time 4X4. Mines has the option to shift it out. I've used mine for everything from running mud to hauling heavy trailers full of wood, and never had a problem. Ride is better than my wifes 04 400 FIS. I am running bigger tires too, 27" Bearclaws.

this is in my opinion an excellent machine ,and i actually would have one sitting in the shop next to the tbx if i hadnt come across the eiger while shopping around[that purchase was purely cost driven]. it is in fact an improved version of an eiger[i feel the rear suspension is better designed in terms of the trailing arm arraingment and the shocks are adjustable] good choice ..... what sort of price are you looking at[noncurrent 05 at local bass pro was 4100 otd]

Yeah is the all the time 4x4 bad for corners and turing ? I think the striaght axel rear end is better for breaking lose but can u with all time 4x4 ? i looked at the irs but its about 6,300 otd i like the 4,900 otd price tag on the striaght axle it dosent have the odometer but hey ill keep track of my hours. If im going to spend over six grand im getting a outlander there awsome. im really worried about the tall suspension and the all the time 4x4 i dont want to be a pancake. Im just wondering if the striaght axel all the time 4x4 with tall suspensine is going to slow me down or get me in a bad wreak just trail riding. The dealer told me top speed is about 55 is that true ???

you know i brain faded on that point[all time 4wd], i actually use my eiger more [75/25] in 2wd. so i couldnt tell you if the all time is bad[it would use more fuel] , but it might push me to a switchable machine in that respect if i were shopping.....

Craw - I have the 2006 404 4x4 LE with automatic trans. I can switch from 2WD to 4WD. I don't know about the straight axle 400 is full time 4wd. I can tell you that 4WD is harder to turn then 2WD, so I use it as little as possible. I can tell you that when I get stuck, 4WD usually gets me out of whatever mess I'm in. In 2WD, I have no problem sliding out of corners, but it takes getting use to the higher center of gravity compared to a 2-stroke.
