Default AC 400 4x4 on Trails

I'm new to the forum. Looks like a good place to get some good advice so here we go. I am going to buy a new Quad next week and I am seriously looking at the AC 400 4x4. I have read that it is not that good on trails though. Anyone have any first hand experience. The trails I ride are mostly rocky and full of rutts. Any suggestions?

I don't know who says the 400 is no good on trails, but they must never have ridden one. I mostly trail ride with mine and the limiting factor is my desire to not get hurt anymore. It's gone every where all the other stock machines have and lots of time with less effort on my part due to the ground clearence and suspension travel. Some will claim that you need a bigger engine, but all that does is use fuel faster and give you a few more mph (as if 50 isn't fast enough). There is a reason the 400 is Arctic Cats best seller.

I have an 06 400 auto. It goes over or through anything you got the nerve to try. Especially when you lock in the front diff. It would probably climb a tree. That machine will do more than you will ever need.

i have an 06 400 4x4 auto fis and it is an all around great quad it conquers everything in its path it is a little bulky which makes it tough in tight situations but the ride is so comfortable i bought this as my first quad and now i want one for the wife. well shell get mine ill get the 07 lol .but if you do go cat see if you can haggle a winch out of the deal because if you do get stuck it is a big heavy quad and your not pushing it out good luck let us kbnow what you decide

The size thing is true. The 400 on up are all the same size and thats big. I wouldn't be without my winch, even though I've learned to judge better and usually use it to drag out those of more go now that think about it first.

i dont know what kind of trails you want to ride but my tbx 400 has gone everywhere ive had to take it so far. that being said its a little more machine from a physical standpoint than my eiger, which is my favorite for strictly cruising around. but the AC's are great all around machines

Bear and others made good points. I have the 400 4X4 LE which cost $600 more then the base model (If I remember correctly) which get you the winch, front and back bumper and matching color rims. Ground clearance is great on trails. I went this weekend and was able to go over trees, ruts, etc that other large machines got stuck on. A winch is key becuase the machines are 700 pounds and you can't puch it easily in mud.

my bro in law has a 400

he said few sellers for him

ground clearance + ability to almost submerge it. if youre doing mud holes, etc, you will appreciate the extra 4"

plus ive seen him back it up into a lake to pull my jetski trailer out, and he had water up to the seat, no problems at all.

trails out here all want to include water/mud as much as possible, the cats work decent. plus he hasnt had problems with belts, leaks, drum brakes, etc.

my only gripe about his cat is it is sometimes hard to shift (f N R .. automatic). prolly because im not pushing it in or some shizzle.

but az, man i would be tempted to get a sport!
