Buy the 500. I have a 400 auto and broke my cardinal rule; buy the biggest bike you can afford. If you don't need it fine but its there when you do.

recon,

I have a 400 auto. I went to it from a Polaris 330. I about crapped myself with the amount of power increase I had from my old machine. I run 25" tires on it and let me tell you it will go through stuff like you can't believe. That being said, next time around, I'll probably get a 650 or 700....simply because I can. What you really need to do is think about what you're going to use your AC for. If you're going to be a hard core mudder, I would suggest going up to a 650. I don't think you're going to see a huge price difference between the 500 and 650. Also, if you're not in too big a hurry, look at the dealers in August or September next year when the 08's start showing up and they're trying to get rid of the 07's. I picked up my 400 auto new for $5200 at BPS when the new model years were showing up. Something to consider.

toe

i would love to go to the 650 but im only 14 and just started riding the middle of the summer....thats a huge step up from a 250 to the 650....my dad said no bigger than a 500....we're gonna try our best to get another bike before august b.c. of mudfest down in florida so we can have two bikes. we not gonnaa buy new b.c. of the price of a new 400 ...i could get a used 500 with some extras on it.....we'll see once we get some money going but im pretty sure we're going with a 500 manual...if we can find one cheap...
