Questions About My New 400 LE
There was a big discussion as to when to switch to synthetic. I guess the consensus was that you can switch at any time. Some felt that the engine would not break-in with synthetic but that is not true.
My $0.02 worth is that I would change oil now to a regular oil and then change again in about 200 or 300 miles (or what ever the manual says for the first oil change after the break-in period) to a synthetic. The reason for the regular oil is pure economic, it is cheaper. And you would be replacing it very soon.
I would change oil now because the machine has been sitting for a period of time and the oil may have degraded during that period. And change in a couple hundred miles after the break-in period.
I can't remember exactly but I think the break-in period was 100 miles and the first major service was 1,000 miles I would have to check my manual but if someone else knows exactly please correct this.
From that point on I generally change oil based on color and not hours or miles. One my oil goes byond a light brown toward a dark brown is when I change it. And I start every season with an oil change in April. Some years I only change the oil once and other times twice but it depends on how much I used it and the color of the oil.
