Default 2000 AC 500 4x4 tranny problem

I am new to here and am sure I can learn some new stuff about wheeling. I have a problem with a buddies wheeler that I am not sure about. THe arctic cat 500 automatic he has started making a funny clicking noise, thought was a cv joint. Not the case, the transmission may have went on it, not sure. It will start up no problem, but seems to be in nuetral, hi/lo or 2/4 wheel doesn't matter. Maybe someone can help me with this and is it easy to fix? I am a backyard mechanic only, but will try anything once. If anyone could tell me how to check or if there may be another problem, i would appreciate the help, Thanks.....

first thing that comes to mind is the belt. take the cover off and see if its broke. or maybe the clutch springs have broke so it wont engage? im not exactly sure how these trannys are put together. i dont have an auto. but these are suggestions that ive seen on others in the past.
