Anyone know the valve clearance for intake and exhaust on an 05 Arctic Cat 400 Auto FIS?

P.S. owner manual says 3.08 L oil ....... not, should be 4 L oil

Valve Clearance AC 500
INTAKE 0.05-0.010mm (0.002-0.004in.)
EXHAUST 0.17-0.22mm (0.007-0.009in)

My service manual says 3.4L (3.5qts) for the oil. But since I have not found a place to buy partial quarts I just fill it up and read the dip stick. Oil level is measured by not screwing the dip stick in though.

Called a dealer and looked up 400 auto clearances
.002-.004 intake
.009-.011 exhaust

Works and sounds tight.

Sorry Flyntigre I guess I did not have m glasses on or was looking through these darn bofocals wrong. I gave you cleanance for an AC 04 500. I now see you were looking for an AC 05 400.

If you do not have the AC valve tappet adjustment tool and use a feeler gauge instead it is easy to get them too tight because of the amount of space you have to work with.

Not a pleasant space to work but I removed fuel tank and customized fealer guage angle, tricky working pin but got it set nice.

Yeah last time I did mine I had to take the tank, side panels, and the coil off to get some room to work. I took a set of feeler gauges and put them in a vise and bent them to fit into the little space and get at the tappet.

I do not think you can get the AC valve adjustment tool into there to do to intake valves. I have only done it 2 times and I have almost 15,000miles on my AC 400.

My 400 has always run very hot at times in the summer creating a heat rash on my legs with or with out pants so I have been attempting to find the reason with no help from the dealer who said that is normal. This unit came with winch and heavy bumper effectively limiting air flow to oil cooler.
So far I have removed much of the front grill, fender splash guards, improved flow into air intake and went down two heat ranges spark plug which has helped a large amount but not total cure. Fathfully I have changed the oil using very expensive high end oil to help with heat and only now have I discovered the actual oil volume in cat manual is wrong by almost 1 full litre (low) explaining the last puzzle to heat. 3600miles on unit and the timing chain started making a shinging noise that became substantial enough I thought it might be piston slap. Upon inspection I noticed chain is ok but obvoiusly getting loose not only side to side but also in the links. Welded a **** on auto timing chain adjuster to increase spring presure and noise has subsided 75% so valves tuned and engine runs much better although timing chain is still a little noisy.
Funny how Cat could make such a big mistake on oil volume right in the owners manual and dealer CD?

There is also a compression release mechanism on the cam itself that rattlesa bit.

I personally do not have an issue with the heat where I ride here in Alaska. I know guys who have wrapped the exhaust in insulation, removed the trunk box and added and additional fan to blow air across and out the back of the bike. By removing the rear trunk (I think this was an AC500) it allowed air to flow out better. Some of the newer machines have almost totally enclosed the sides so that air is forced to flow in the front and out the back.

I only have an issue with this while I am plowing during the winter because the plow blocks air flow I guess, but then its cold outside I I don't pay too much attention to it.

I can tell you that if you get too much oil into the engine it will do all kinds of bad stuff. Like blow the seals out of the sides of the can, blow the oil cooling lines off, etc.

When I change my oil and check the oiil level I always make sure it is topped off to the max on the dipstick. I don't know how it compares to the manual but it is about 3.5qts.

You may want to check out a larger oil cooler. I am wondering if you put a larger capacity one in if it would cool better.
