Default New to AC - 2000 AC 500???

Hi all, i am new to the forum and new to AC (Will be the proud owner of a 2000 AC 500 Manual on Monday afternoon. It is a one owner machine that has approximately 1700 - 1800 miles on it. The owner indicated that the speedo stopped working last spring when it had 1300 miles on it. According to him it has been well maintained and looks like a nice atv in the pictures i saw.

I have owned two polaris sportsman, a 500 and 600, but have never owned an AC. I was prepared to purchase an 04 sportsman 500 this afternoon but ran across this deal and couldn't pass it up. i hope i made the right choice and would appreciate anything you all could offer in the way of positive and negatives with these bikes. Also, anything you could offer in the way of repairing the speedo would be much appreciated. One other thing the guy mentioned was that the FWD / REV inkage would come loose between the shifter and pin due to some sort of rubber grommet??? anybody ever heard of this??? All it does is not allow you to use the gear shift lever.......

Is it difficult to change the drive belt???

I am sure i will be back on here quite a bit after Monday. I like to tinker on stuff like this and will surely be consulting the rest of you.

thank you

im not sure about replacing the belt, i havent done it yet and if the bike dont need one then wouldnt worry about it. Tons of people on here with thousands of miles on thier atv and have never replaced a belt. I also dont know anything about the linkage he is talking about, but i have replaced a speedo cable(it was rusted and broke) on my 99 300 when i had it. Very easy fix as long as its the same set up. the cable runs into the gearbox on the side of the engine, unscrew it and pull the whole cable off. This may requier taking some plastic off. If you like to tinker as you said then its a very simple project.I think it took me like 20 minutes to do it. Hopefuly the bike will serve you well. I have an 02 500 manual with 3700 miles and have not had many issues other than my own fault like, wheel bearings due to lots of mud riding, broke 2 axles due to over size tires and me being stupid, but both were replaced under warrenty(excelant dealer). other than that its been an awsome machine.
