I would try welding it again, or have a professional weld it Replacing the shaft is going to be to much work or to expensive, and I would wait until absolutely necessary to do that.
Just my $0.02
Good luck.

If you can get the shifter off you might try building up the shaft end a little with a welder and then regrinding a few notched or a shafe to it. Then build up and grind the same shape inside the shifter. You would need to be careful as there is an oil seal onthat shaft and it is a pain to repalce if you damage it.
You may be able to drill a hole in the shifter but not through the shaft to help lock the shifter in place.
I have used some JB weld to fix one in the past.
To reaplace the shaft you have to remove the motor, remove the top end, split the lower case and remove the shifting shaft. then put it back together. Probably be $1000-$1500 in a shop. Part is probably $150 along with a few seals and gaskets. Sometimes if you call a dealer they will give you cost estimates over the phone. They have their $ per hour costs and they have a book that tells them how long it takes (in general) to do certain tasks. Some need to see the machine to make adjustments to these tables.
