Some clicking is normal and is caused by either the valve tappets or time chain slap. Also your cam is steel and rides on a cast aluminum bearing surface. So if it does not get the proper lubrication due to low oil, wrong type of oil, etc the aluminum bearing surface on the head gets tatered easily. I know this first hand from a lack of oil on my 400 due to water in the oil freezing in the oil cooler and restricting the oil flow. Once the engine restarted it sounded like a one cylinder diesel!
It cost about $1200 in parts, rebuilt the entire top end, and took a couple of weeks of evenings and weekends to complete. Runs fine now and I have roughly 15,000mi on it.
On a side note if you get the valves too tight they make noise and if they are too loose they make noise adjusted just right they make only a slight tapping noise. If your TRV is water cooled there was an issue with the water pump having a restriction in it an not functioning correctly. I know the 500TRV's are water cooled but I am not sure about the 400's?
