My cat sputtered out a couple of days ago when I got into water just above the front racks. I have had it water just as deep if not deeper and have done fine in the past.
It died in the water and I tried to crank it over but it would not. After I fished it out of the stream I took off the seat and found the air cleaner and box wet. The top of the snorkle which is high in the seat was dry. I checked the screws around the rubber hose clamps and found some loose. I think this is where I got my water from.
I then got it started with the filter off. It spit and coughed awhile then took off fine. I put the filter back on and rode it home. When I got home I drained the oil and luckly no water.
One strange thing about it though, it seems to have a little more power than it did before it swallowed some water. Strange huh? Well I hope this helped.
Later...

Hey how is everybody. I have had my 300 AC 4x4 in water up to the front racks with no problems as of yet, hope there will be none. The deal with more power after the water I have heard of people putting water in the carb. of cars and trucks to help clean off carbon maybe that was what happened in your case. Glad you didn't tear nothing up. Ride Safe and God Bless

I had A similar problem once and the problem turned out to be the duckbill drain on the bottom of the airbox. It had A piece of mud in it and wouldn't close completely. I replaced it and it was fine again. I've been over the front rack several times with no problems, and over the handlebars once, but dried it out and it's fine 1500 miles later.

simple, put some dielectric grease in the spark plug boot, the sputtering out is due to the water taking away some of the spark.

Check this out guys, Cats have float bowl vents that are lower than the air intake. They are only vented to the top of the carb, extend these vent lines up to air intake, I just zip tied mine to the carb intake.

I did this also, I used a hose too small and it made it alittle harder/easier to start, but other wise I love it. All I do now to start it is give it full choke and it starts on the first crank, no trying to mess with the choke to get it perfect.
