Default I want to control when my fan comes on

I have a 1999 Artic cat 500 and i want to control when my fan comes on. Would i cut off metal sensor connectors and twist wires together and add third wire going to toggle switch. If so what gauge wire should i use?
Thanks for any replies

There probably is a fan relay.

I would trace the fan motor wires back to the relay. On the relay, replace the temperature sensor wires at the relay with the wires to your switch.

You can use whatever is the "general use" wiring to the switch--must likely 16 or 18 gauge.

If you plan to direct wire the fan (not through a relay) use must ensure:
1) the wiring you use is equal or larger (lower gauge number) than the factory wiring
AND
2) the switch is rated for amperage that the fan motor will pull.

Failure to follow either criteria could lead to melting/failure of the switch and/or wiring.

You may want to wire your switch in parallel with the temp sensor switch.

In parallel, your manual switch in the "ON" position will activate the fan. With your switch in the "OFF" position, the fan motor runs in "automatic mode"--controlled by the factory temp sensor switch. Essentially, the switch you added simply overrides the factory temp sensor switch.

The advantage of the parallel wired switched is safety. If you forget to activate the fan motor, the quad's own temperature sensor will, and overheating/destruction of your engine is prevented.

Thanks for your reply. Could you explain how to wire in parallel. That sounds like the best thing to do
